Henry Hudson docked his ship in Haverstraw Bay in 1609. The present day village of Haverstraw was founded in 1666. Prior to adopting its present name, the village was known as Florus Falls and Waynesburgh. It became the Village of Warren in 1854. The village was given its current name on April 14, 1874. The name was chosen because of the abundance of wild oats that grew in the village. Until World War II, Haverstraw was famous for its brickmaking industry. It was also known as the “Brickmaking Capital of the World.”
