Airmont History
The Tallman family moved into this region in 1675, establishing a farm and becoming the first permanent European settlers in the area. Route 59 opened in 1828, facilitating transportation. In 1841, the Piermont branch railroad was established. The wife of Reverend Bodine named the community Airmont in 1890 because of the area’s elevation and natural beauty. In 1989, residents of Airmont voted in favor of creating their own village. It was incorporated in 1991.
The 2,145-acre Ramapo Valley County Reservation, and the 1,351-acre Campgaw Mountain Reservation offer nature trails and opportunities for fishing and camping. The Pascack Historical Society Museum, the Old Stone House Museum, the Schoolhouse Museum, and the Ringwood Manor House Museum are some of the local museums. Darlington County Park features two lakes, beaches, picnic areas, and volleyball, tennis and handball courts. The High Tor State Park offers views of the Hudson River, along with nature trails and picnic areas.
